How to Get a Work Permit
Before you apply, you must meet the following employment permit requirements:
Received a confirmed job offer from an authorized UK employer acting as a sponsor; at
Have a sponsorship certificate issued by your sponsoring sponsor; at
Pass the point analysis, the details of which can be found in the category-specific authorization categories in the category.
We advise the three main categories of work permits in the UK. These are:
- General level 2 – Skilled worker
- Level 2 intra-company transfer
- Level 2 athlete visa
- The work permit application process is led by the employer who is responsible for issuing
- a sponsorship certificate to you (the applicant).

UK work permits (general category) and permanent residence
As a UK work permit holder, you are eligible for permanent residence if you have lived and worked in the UK for at least five years. Once you have met the five-year requirement, you may be eligible for indefinite leave to stay in the UK, which may be followed by British Naturalization as a British citizen.
Intra-company transfers and permanent residence
As a British ICT work permit holder, you can benefit from permanent residence if you have lived and worked in the UK for at least five years and obtained a level 2 intra-company transfer visa in accordance with the rules in effect before April 6, 2010, or had prior leave as a work permit holder. Once you have met the five-year requirement, you may be eligible for indefinite leave to stay in the UK (ILR), which may be followed by British Naturalization as a British citizen.
- If you want to change employers, you must obtain a new sponsorship certificate from an authorized employer. You must also reevaluate from the current points test and the position meets the advertising requirements of the resident labour market test (if applicable).
